The word ‘bandhani’, also known as ‘bandhej’, is derived from the Sanskrit word bandh, to tie, a craft practised in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It is a resist dyeing process where the fabric is pinched and tied with thread before it is dyed to create a pattern made up of small dots.
Ajrak printing is wooden hand block printing that involves exquisite designs etched in the wooden block, the difference suggested in the name from the extensive use of the pre-dominant color Ajrak, from the Arabic word Azrak, meaning ‘indigo’ or ‘blue’.
Ajrak craft products are made with natural dyes. The entire production of the products include both vegetable dyes and mineral dyes.
